MT5 trading journal for MetaTrader 5
FOQUS keeps a trading journal for your MetaTrader 5 broker account on its own. Every position goes in without manual entry — with stops, swaps and commissions. To connect, you need your account number, a password and your broker's server, and the journal is free forever.
What FOQUS records from MetaTrader 5
FOQUS logs in to your account the way the terminal does: with the account number, a password and your broker's server. From then on it watches the account by itself. An open position shows up right away, and its profit and stop update live.
A MetaTrader 5 account gives a journal less than the crypto exchanges do:
| Data | MetaTrader 5 | Binance, Bybit, OKX |
|---|---|---|
| Entry, adds, partial closes, exit | yes | yes |
| Stop-loss and take-profit: set, moved, removed | yes | yes |
| Pending entry orders | yes | yes |
| Commission | yes | yes |
| The cost of holding a position | swap | funding |
| Order-book recording | no | yes |
| Market snapshot at each action | no | yes |
What to know about MT5 trades:
- Money in your account currency. FOQUS shows profit, commissions and swaps in the currency your account with the broker is held in.
- Charts on your broker's candles. Every broker has its own quotes, so FOQUS draws the trade on your broker's candles.
- Drawdown and peak profit inside a trade. FOQUS takes them from the floating profit your broker streams. Where that stream broke off, it uses the broker's one-minute candles.
- Connection gaps. If a stop changed while the connection to the broker was down, the timeline doesn't invent a time. It shows the window in which the change happened.
How to connect MT5: login, investor password and server
- Find your account number and server. In the MetaTrader 5 terminal, choose File → Login to Trade Account. The login is your account number, and the Server field holds your broker's server name, for example MetaQuotes-Demo. Copy it exactly.
- Get the investor password. If you don't have one or don't remember it, set a new one: Tools → Options (Ctrl+O) → the Server tab → Change. Enter your current master password, select Change investor password and set a new one.
- Create a FOQUS account and pick MetaTrader 5 under Connect your own account. Already use FOQUS? Click Add account in the account menu.
- Enter the login, the password and the server name, and click Connect MT5.
FOQUS looks the server up in the MetaQuotes directory — the same one the terminal uses to find brokers. If the name isn't there, FOQUS replies: “No MT5 server by that name in the MetaQuotes directory.” Copy the name from the terminal once more.
Is it safe to give FOQUS access to your MT5 account?
- The investor password is view-only. According to the MetaQuotes help, it lets you see the account status and analyze prices, but not trade.
- FOQUS doesn't trade. It accepts the master password too, but even with it, FOQUS only reads: it doesn't open or close positions and doesn't touch your stops. The investor password is still the safer choice — nobody can trade the account with it, even if it leaks.
- What is stored. The login, the password and the server. The password is encrypted.
- No repeated logins. If the broker rejects the password, FOQUS doesn't keep trying to log in. The account menu shows “Check your login details” until you enter the right ones.
- How to disconnect. Delete the account in FOQUS — its data is deleted with it. If you entered the master password, change it in the terminal.
What's next: reviewing your MT5 trades
The timeline shows how you managed a position — say, on EURUSD: where the stop was, when you moved it and what the swap cost. The journal holds every trade on the account as a table, as cards with a chart, or as a weekly, monthly and yearly report.
Tags mark the setup and the mistake, and notes keep your review — typed or dictated. The overview breaks your results down by weekday and hour, so you see when you make money and when you lose it.
MT5 trading journal FAQ
Which password should I enter: master or investor?
The investor one. With it FOQUS sees your trades, and nobody can trade the account. FOQUS accepts the master password too, but there's no need to give it.
Which brokers work?
Any MetaTrader 5 broker whose server is in the MetaQuotes directory. FOQUS has no list of “approved” brokers, and a broker's demo account works too.
Does FOQUS work with MetaTrader 4?
No. FOQUS connects MetaTrader 5 accounts only.
Will my old account history be imported?
No. FOQUS takes only positions opened after you connect. For older ones it has no stop history and no snapshot of the account at entry.
Does a prop firm account work?
Yes, if it's a MetaTrader 5 account and logging in with its login, password and server works. If the firm gives you a new account on the same server, enter the new login and password in FOQUS: account menu → Edit account. You can do that while the account has no open positions, and the journal carries on.
Why does FOQUS say “MT5 login failed”?
The broker didn't accept the login, the password or the server. Check that the server name comes from this account's login window and that the password belongs to this account too.
